Separate working hardware from supported software
A phone can still turn on, make calls, and run applications after its update period ends. Those capabilities do not establish that it meets your organization’s device requirements. Have the responsible administrator review the information and accounts accessible from the device.
Avoid treating a factory reset as a way to extend manufacturer support. It can change the local state of the phone but does not create a new update commitment.
Plan a replacement around the work
List the business applications, authentication methods, contacts, and files that need to move. Confirm the replacement’s support period and compatibility before purchase. Include any device-management requirements and accessories used in the field.
Test the new phone’s sign-in and normal workflow before retiring the old one. Authentication applications and recovery methods deserve specific attention so the employee is not locked out during the handoff.
Retire the old device deliberately
